The new edition of Warhammer 40,000 is introducing a fundamental shift in how games are played, moving away from generic objectives toward a system where your army’s theme dictates its mission.

Here is a breakdown of how the upcoming mission structure and "Force Dispositions" will work.

The Core Concept: Force Dispositions

In the new edition, your choice of Detachment unlocks specific Force Dispositions. This represents the strategic intent of your army—why they are on the battlefield in the first place. Instead of both players chasing the same generic flags, your army will focus on goals that make sense for its lore and playstyle.

There are five primary Force Dispositions:

  • Take and Hold: Traditional objective control.

  • Purge the Foe: Focused on destroying enemy units.

  • Disruption: Performing actions in enemy territory or specific terrain.

  • Reconnaissance: Scouting and maneuver-based scoring.

  • Priority Assets: Securing specific high-value targets.

Asymmetrical Missions

The most significant change is that unless both players choose the same Disposition, you will have different primary objectives. This creates an asymmetrical battle where, for example, a World Eaters player might be scoring by "Purging the Foe" while their T'au opponent is scoring via "Reconnaissance."

Tactical Objectives and Scoring

The "Chapter Approved" mission deck is also receiving a facelift. While the 45VP cap for primary missions remains, how you handle secondary objectives is changing:

  • Tactical Objectives: You no longer discard unachieved cards immediately. Instead, you draw two cards per turn and keep what you haven't scored yet, preventing a "bad draw" from ruining your early game.

  • Twists: These optional cards return to add environmental modifiers, such as allowing units to ignore terrain or even forcing players to swap their primary objectives mid-game.

Tournament vs. Casual Play

For casual "pickup" games, you can choose a new Force Disposition every time you play. However, in a tournament setting, players will likely be required to "lock in" their Force Disposition when they submit their army list. This adds a layer of list-building strategy, as your choice will determine which five missions you are eligible to play throughout the event.

These rules will be featured in the upcoming Armageddon launch box within the new Chapter Approved mission deck. Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the launch of the new edition.
